By creating innovative features in Fedora; which is developed rapidly, released twice a year, and used by millions of people, we can help drive improvements to a myriad of open source projects. <\/p> <p>One such project centers around interoperability. Fedora contributors are constantly working on technologies which enhance, improve and advance interoperability because our audience of developers and enthusiasts interact with a variety of systems every day. Fedora 11 gives users a chance to see these future technologies at work today.<\/p> <p>An important interoperability feature included in the upcoming release of Fedora 11 is OpenChange. OpenChange aims to provide a portable open source implementation of the Microsoft Exchange and Exchange Server protocols. Microsoft Exchange is a proprietary messaging and collaborative software product.  And until now open source clients have been unable to use its full functionality because Exchange utilizes a proprietary protocol, the Messaging Application Programming Interface or MAPI. OpenChange is the first open source implementation of the MAPI protocol. <\/p> <p>The OpenChange implementation provides a client-side library which can be used in existing messaging clients to offer native compatibility with Exchange. Using the &quot;libmapi&quot; library, OpenChange allows clients such as Thunderbird, Evolution, KMail, and other open source applications to utilize the full range of MAPI functionality including messaging, shared calendars, contact databases, public folders, notes and tasks. All applications can now start speaking the same language, regardless of platform. <\/p> <p>In order to enable OpenChange and libmapi to function properly, parts of <a href=\"https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/OpenChange\">Samba 4<\/a>, the open source software suite for interoperability with Microsoft network resources, has been updated in Fedora 11.  Samba is the software that allows Linux hosts to use services such as Windows File and Printer Sharing, authentication and authorization functionality, and name resolution. <\/p> <p>This is another way that the Fedora community is solving problems for open source users. I&#039;ve been lucky enough to serve as a current and past judge of the Red Hat and JBoss <a href=\"http://www.redhat.com/promo/summit/2009/awards/\">Innovation Awards<\/a> which recognize the technological achievements of our customers.  Take a look <a href=\"http://customers.redhat.com/category/infrastructure/red-hat-innovation-awards/\">here<\/a> to learn more about past Innovation Award recipients such as Hill Air Force Base, McKesson, Comcast, Kaplan and Daiwa Securities.<\/p> <p>So many customers have achieved impressive results through the use of Red Hat and JBoss technologies.  The submissions continue to blow me away each year and I anticipate another great round of entries for 2009.  In particular, the current economic climate has placed unprecedented pressure on CIOs to reduce IT spending while still delivering quality solutions.  New this year to the Innovation Awards is the Carved Out Costs category which recognizes those who have used open source solutions to cut costs and to maximize the value of their IT budgets.<\/p> <p>Nominations are open until May 31 and winners will be presented at this year&#039;s co-located <a href=\"http://www.redhat.com/promo/summit/2009/\">Red Hat Summit<\/a> and <a href=\"http://www.jbossworld.com/\">JBoss World<\/a> to be held September 1-4, 2009 in Chicago. Five categories will each recognize two winning projects, one from Red Hat and one from JBoss, and a sixth category will recognize a winning project that utilized both Red Hat and JBoss solutions. From these category winners, a Red Hat Innovator of the Year and a JBoss Innovator of the Year will be selected by the community through online voting and announced at the awards ceremony.<\/p> <p>I encourage you to <a href=\"https://www.eiseverywhere.com/ereg/newreg.php?eventid=4146&amp;PHPSESSID=t2ap3qn0nlisuvmi87laos0vk1&amp;\">nominate<\/a> your company&#039;s achievements or an innovative business or organization that you worked with for an Innovation Award.
