Most companies claim to be customer-centric. In truth, most businesses are not as customer-centric as they think.<\/p> <p>True customer engagement starts with leadership. Yet, senior executives often get distracted by the grinds of running the business - operations, financials, strategy and other day-to-day activities.<\/p> <p>To remain competitive, business leaders must keep their fingers on the pulse of the entire customer experience, from beginning to end. Executives can unintentionally (and quickly) find themselves out of touch with the realities of the customer experience being created by their company on a daily basis.<\/p> <p><span style=\"color: rgb(204, 51, 51);\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><strong>No Substitute for Direct Engagement<\/strong><\/span><\/span><br/> Leaders often depend on customer surveys, market research and anecdotal evidence of how customers perceive their company. While this information is valuable, nothing takes the place of real, live, regular and direct engagement with a cross sampling of your customer base.<\/p> <p>This level of engagement will not only help you gain valuable insights into the issues and challenges faced by your customers each day, but it will also help you begin to understand your customers&#039; perceptions of your company as a whole.<\/p> <p>Customer feelings and emotions are difficult to extract from surveys and research, but they can easily be learned from sincere one-on-one dialogue. Ask yourself how often you talk and meet with customers in venues that generate honest and open discussion about how customers feel about your product, service, value proposition, employees and company overall.<\/p> <p><span style=\"color: rgb(204, 51, 51);\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><strong>Customers at the Forefront<\/strong><\/span><\/span><br/> It is not necessary to create a complex program or process. You might simply require that all key leaders meet regularly with randomly selected customers, and report back on what they learned. The goal of such a program is not to create a litany of action items. Rather, leaders should be exposed to your customers&#039; real issues, as well as sensitized to how the decisions they make will impact customers.<\/p> <p>Be careful that executives do not try to extrapolate trends from just a few customer interactions; that&#039;s what quantitative research is for. Simply let your leaders build customer relationships one-on-one, knowing that each customer could have a unique point of view or concern.<\/p> <p>To be a truly customer-centric company, you must put customers first in all decision making. As your business leaders make a habit of regular customer visits, they can more effectively keep the customers&#039; interests, passions and concerns at the forefront.<\/p> <p>It is important to remember, however, that customer-centricity is not just for senior leaders. Keeping customers top-of-mind in all decision-making should be ingrained into your company culture.<\/p> <p><span style=\"color: rgb(204, 51, 51);\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><strong>The Good, Bad and Ugly<\/strong><\/span><\/span><br/> Putting yourself and your leadership team in the shoes of your customers is really a simple concept. Just keep asking one basic question: As a customer, how would I like to be treated?<\/p> <p>Put yourself out there, and be prepared to hear the good, the bad and the ugly. The bad and the ugly often contain the &quot;golden nuggets&quot; needed to improve a company&#039;s competitiveness in the marketplace.<\/p> <p>Leon Leonwood Bean, founder of L.L. The interactive dashboard pulls data from within the CRM system, external websites, and integrated Sage ERP systems in real-time. The dashboard, which features drag and drop capabilities, was built with simple customization as a key attribute. The new web interface and navigation was designed to meet what 82&#037; of CRM user respondents to Yankee Group&#039;s sales management survey cited as the most important feature of a CRM system: ease-of-use.<\/span><\/p><p>&quot;I wouldn&#039;t say that Sage CRM was deficient in usability prior to v7.0,&quot; says Larry Ritter senior vice president of Product Management at Sage, &quot;but we&#039;ve enhanced the usability in this product. Usability has been expanded because it enables data from multiple sources to be put easily onto one dashboard. If I was using Sage CRM in the past I could create certain views of data that I have access to and put it onto the dashboard. With this dashboard we&#039;ve enhanced it to allow those data feeds to come through a variety of sources.&quot;<\/p><p>SageCRM v7.0\nleverages SData protocol, Sage&#039;s REST-based technology standard used to develop advanced customizations and integration between Sage ERP systems and third-part\ny applications.<\/p><p>&quot;Sage was the first company to convince me of the value of REST for the architecture of back and front office applications,\not; says Greenberg. &quot;REST has four commands and that&#039;s it. If you know how to navigate a web site you can handle REST. So from that standpoint you&#039;re dealing with a company that knew their audience and restructured everything they did and built their architecture around REST. If you look at large companies now, they all have REST APIs.&quot;<\/p><p>Greenberg is also a fan of Sage&#039;s contact and customer software Act 2010 Premium, a product he hopes Sage has copied in the creation of its new Act! Mobile Live, a cloud-based subscription service that delivers ACT! by Sage contact and customer management data to <a href=\"http://www.blackberry.com/\">BlackBerry<\/a> devices.<\/p><p>According to Sage&#039;s Act! According to the report, leading companies are employing electronic payments and process automation to streamline and accelerate finance processes, reduce operating costs, and improve visibility, control, and efficiency to provide a foundation for increased profits.<\/p> <p>&quot;Despite the reign of the paper check and manual-based processes in business-to-business transactions in the U.S. and many parts of the world, economic and efficiency gains from automating the financial supply chain-from invoicing through payment settlement-are key motivators for demand and supply to align,&quot; said Nasreen Quibria, senior analyst at Aberdeen and author of the report. &quot;While the adoption of electronic payment vehicles requires businesses to alter their payment behavior and restructure their financial processes, companies that can make the shift will gain competitive advantage.&quot;<\/p> <p>Reflecting the unpredictable economic conditions of the past year, Aberdeen found that companies are focused on maximizing cash flow and taking a holistic approach to transactions-examining the flow of funds into Accounts Receivable (AR), and outflow of funds from Accounts Payable (AP).<\/p> <p>In its survey of more than 160 companies worldwide, Aberdeen found that businesses adopting electronic channels have been able to achieve a 16&#037; decrease in accounts receivable (AR) processing cost, and a 14&#037; decrease in accounts payable (AP) costs year over year.<\/p> <p>&quot;Aberdeen&#039;s report shows the value that systems interoperability with electronic payment networks has for both buyers and suppliers,&quot; said Greg Hammermaster, president of Sage Payment Solutions, the payments division for Sage North America. &quot;We believe this interoperability is critical toward achieving three major payments objectives for every business: improving cash flow, reducing costs, and maximizing the utility of their ERP environment.&quot;<\/p> <p>The Aberdeen survey identified two main pressures creating the need for improved payments processing:<\/p> <ul> <li>Corporate mandate to reduce overall payment transaction costs, such as staff and processing (65&#037;); and<\/li> <li>Stakeholder demand for improved operational efficiency, such as reduced reliance on paper documents (47&#037;).<\/li> <\/ul> <p>Also, according to Aberdeen, 50&#037; of best-in-class companies integrate their electronic payment solutions with their accounting, enterprise resource planning (ERP), or other financial systems. At the same time, 39&#037; of best-in-class companies identify a lack of integration between electronic payments and accounting systems as a barrier to increased electronic payments.<\/p> <p>Last month, Sage introduced Sage Exchange, a new secure, Payment Application Data Security Standard (PA-DSS) certified payment platform that will allow businesses and organizations to accept all forms and methods of payment, with seamless data integration to a wide range of Sage business management software products and third-party business solutions. Seamless integration between payment applications and back-office software can improve an organization&#039;s cash flow and forecasting, while eliminating manual data entry and the risk of errors.<\/p> <p>&quot;Integrating electronic payment networks with back office ERP systems is a challenge faced by all businesses,&quot; added Hammermaster. &quot;Sage Exchange overcomes this challenge by tightly integrating Sage&#039;s accounting and ERP solutions, on both the AR and AP sides, with the most widely used electronic payment networks, including credit and debit cards, electronic check, ACH, and even private label networks. While electronic payments data integration is the foundation, exponential value will be gained through a suite of connected services focused on streamlining the financial supply chain. Prior to Sage, Miller worked at Microsoft for eight years. Reflecting back over year one, Miller said he&#039;s &quot;pleased&quot; with the progress the company&#039;s made with its channel thus far. <\/p><p>&quot;I&#039;m pleased with the progress we&#039;ve made but I think we still have a lot of work to do.&quot; Miller said. &quot;We need to make sure we have the right sets of programs for our partners and help them find new customers and opportunities. We also have to get communications out to our partners and provide training so we&#039;re all partner-ready. I&#039;m confident that we can get there, but it&#039;s an evolving work in progress.&quot; <\/p><p>Among some of the new partner offerings are four workshops around sales, consulting, customer experience and business strategy. <\/p><p>Miller said when he joined Sage last summer and had a look at the existing programs, one of the improvements he wanted to make was increasing the number of partners participating in them. <\/p><p>&quot;We found that some of these programs were too expensive from a time and out-of-pocket standpoint,&quot; Miller explained. &quot;Partners also wanted a more condensed version that was offered closer to home.&quot; <\/p><p>To give partners more of what they wanted, Miller said Sage introduced its sales, consulting and customer experience workshops. The sales workshop is a free, one-day intensive selling workshop to help partners improve on their sales performance. The consulting workshop, which is also free, is designed to help partners further develop their business and consulting skills. And lastly, the customer experience workshop is a free two session workshop that coaches partners on customer experience and also on developing specific skills in order to better serve their end-user customers. <\/p><\/span><\/div><table id='zwNextPrev' width='100%'><tr><td style='text-align: left;' align='left'>&lt;&lt; Sage SalesLogix Cloud, which was introduced to partners last year, will be available to customers in June.<\/p><p>To provide context for Sage&#039;s &quot;cloudy&quot; announcement, <em><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">Bruce Guptill,<\/span> s<\/em>enior vice president and head of research at analysis firm Saugatuck Technology, shared survey results indicating that an average of 20 percent of firms today use such cloud-based solutions for at least one core business system. The figure, Guptill predicted, will double by year-end 2012. <br/> <br/> &quot;A couple of years ago, if you wanted to be good at SaaS, you had to be good at the infrastructural level -- and hats off to them,&quot; said Larry Ritter, senior vice president and general manager of Sage CRM Applications. &quot;We have always been at the applications.&quot;<\/p><p>Along with Joe Bergera, executive vice president and global general manager for Sage CRM Solutions, Ritter explained the cloud solution in depth during a press and analyst session here. <\/p>    <p>Sage took an incremental approach with the cloud offering. Bergera said the solution was made available to select &quot;handheld customers&quot; in December. Twelve customers have been signed on with the Amazon subscription-based solution to-date. Hundreds more are using it through a SalesLogix trial. Prior to the cloud solution Sage was limited in offering trials to customers.<\/p><p>&quot;We are actually getting a lot of traction just by having the solution,&quot; offered Allen Duet, senior product manager for Sage CRM. Some customers, in fact, have signed on with Sage on-premise CRM just for knowing that the vendor has a cloud offering on tap that it could migrate to in the future. <\/p><p>Sage is calling this June release Phase 1 of SalesLogix Cloud. The solution will be expanded to international partners and customers later this year. Also a new version of SalesLogix on-premises will be released in the next 6 weeks. SalesLogix Cloud is offered to customers in two ways. Customers can provide named users who will access the solution, or companies can pay for five &quot;concurrent users&quot; and rotate the licenses throughout the organization on an as-need basis. <br/> <br/> Sage deals primarily through a partner channel, which may be an explanation of the year-long ramp-up of the cloud solution. &quot;Some partners really stepped up to the plate,&quot; Ritter reported. &quot;The ones attacking this opportunity are seeing overall pipeline expand.&quot; He noted, however, that the value proposition for partners is different. &quot;You aren&#039;t going to make the same kind of money that you used to,&quot; he said. <br/> <br/> In terms of Act!, Bergera said Sage is focusing on the connected services to bring users online. The Sage e-Marketing application, for example, offers customers the reach of the Web, but keeps the core contact management system where many users want it -- on the desktop. Ritter speculated that Sage might some day want to do something similar with Act! and the cloud, but the price point does not make sense right now. <br/> <br/> Ritter hinted at a handful of connected services to come later this summer. One of particular interest for CRM users will be an integrated Web service with Hoover&#039;s.<\/p><p>Beagle Research Principal Denis Pombriant notes that the SalesLogix cloud solution may be on the periphery of being called a software-as-a-service application. Pombriant wagers that Sage is more fittingly categorized as an application service provider (ASP) since Amazon is the company doing the hosting. <\/p><p>Ritter said that the company is ultimately working down the path toward becoming a hybrid service provider where companies use both installed Sage products and Web services. After all, Sage&#039;s definition of cloud, as iterated by Himanshu Palsule, Executive Vice President of Product Strategy and Marketing of <em>Sage<\/em> Business Solutions at Tuesday&#039;s keynote, means &quot;taking the richness of on-premise applications and connecting it to the reach of Web services.&quot; <\/p><p>With Act! reaching out to the Web for extensions, and with SalesLogix finding its place in the cloud, executives hinted that a Sage application store in the cloud may be a big move to come. <\/p><\/span><\/div><table id='zwNextPrev' width='100%'><tr><td style='text-align: left;' align='left'>&lt;&lt; experience in managing through recent economic conditions, as well as business owners&#039; opinions on the government-sponsored job stimulus programs. Sage conducted the survey this spring, shortly after the Obama Administration announced a series of proposals aimed specifically at small and midsized business owners.<\/p> <p>Respondents weighed in on the small business proposals, on topics such as capital expenditure deductions, new employee tax credits and refinancing existing debt, among others. While there was support for some of the proposals from individual respondents and 61&#037; of those surveyed found at least one of the proposals helpful, there was no universal endorsement, by a majority of participants, for any one single proposal.<\/p> <p>The proposal that was considered to be most helpful-to extend through 2010 the provision that accelerates the rate at which businesses can deduct the cost of capital expenditures-was found helpful by only 37 percent of respondents. Other proposals found most helpful were the payroll tax reimbursement (33 percent); elimination of the capital gains tax for investments (33 percent); tax credit for new hires (31 percent); and the immediate expense of qualified investment (30 percent). In general, the proposals related to SBA (Small Business Administration) loans were seen as less helpful than the other proposals.<\/p> <p>Small businesses represent a strong voice in the American economic conversation. According to the most recent figures by the Small Business Administration, there are 27.2 million small businesses in the United States which are responsible for jobs of more than half of the population, including both their owners and employees.<\/p> <p>&quot;Our survey results echo what has already been widely reported, but also indicate that small business owners are incredibly passionate and will be a strong voice at the polls come November elections,&quot; said Connie Certusi, general manager, small business accounting solutions, Sage North America. &quot;Sage is listening to its customers and in response we are providing an open forum for Congressional delegates, public officials and small businesses to come together to discuss issues affecting American small businesses through our SageSpark.com Small Business Forum.&quot;<\/p> <p>Earlier this week, Sage launched the Small Business Forum on SageSpark.com as a place where business owners can connect and discuss current legislation and other issues affecting their business; share tips and advice; and access helpful resources from Sage.
