The paper covered all of the ideas you&#039;d expect including lowering costs and improving access to on-demand applications.  But there was another part of the paper that speculated that if technology was that easy to come by then the next thing to look for was enhanced service based on the technology.<\/p> <p>In other words, technology access would cease being a gating factor in executing business processes.  Replacing technology as a gating factor would be having the smarts to use it optimally.  I envisioned that service companies that had operated more or less locally would, or at least could, become national or global by selling their expertise based on the on-demand technology.  The computer and telephone enabled public relations firms to become national in scope, but a bit more is required for a marketing services company or a design company for example.<\/p> <p>It has taken a long time and it seems what happened first and what I had not fully foreseen was the globalization of applications based on platform technologies.  Right now, Salesforce appears to be the most successful practitioner of that art.  But now we appear to be at the beginning of an era when business services will become global or at least national based on the consolidated expertise of some organizations.<\/p> <p>Judging by some of Sage Software&#039;s recent actions, that globalization might be taking off at the SMB end of the spectrum.  Recently, Sage announced new marketing services for its ACT! customers.  The first service will be email marketing available on-demand.  Now this may not seem to be a very big move since there are many independent email marketing providers already on the market like Constant Contact, ExactTarget, VerticalResponse and many others (you get 36 million hits on Google).<\/p> <p>But don&#039;t lose sight of the bigger picture.  With a three million user installed base in North America that has many marketing needs beyond email, Sage is poised to build a services engine that could eventually rival its software business.  This would be a very smart end run around the company&#039;s own business model limitations.  To be precise, Sage sells its products exclusively through a reseller channel.  The resellers deliver product, customization and advice leaving slim pickings for Sage beyond the license revenue.<\/p> <p>The primary way Sage grows in this model is through product sales and by recruiting new partners.  But no market is infinite and the market of resellers is relatively small compared to the market of end users.  You see where I am going.  There is nothing prohibiting Sage from offering services based on the products it makes and the installations that its partners effect.  As a matter of fact, offering this kind of service, which only makes the end customer more productive, should drive demand for the products themselves.  Looks like a smart and virtuous circle to me as well as a new kind of on-demand service.<\/p> <p>I believe the era we are entering will be constraining for many companies in several ways, not the least of which is transportation.  As fuel prices resume their rise with the recovery, companies will need to find ways to take travel costs out of their value propositions.  That should mean a need to enhanced marketing as in, how can we use marketing rather than face time to close more deals?<\/p> <p>The answer to that question goes beyond email marketing and probably beyond the meager efforts that so many SMB companies now use to sell their products.  Centralizing key services that can be delivered at scale via the Internet will enable SMB&#039;s to continue to compete in select markets against larger competitors. <\/p> <p>Sage worked with a number of technology partners to design the X3 release. For example, the suite can be operated on Microsoft SQL Server 2008, and integrates with Microsoft Office to increase ease of use and accelerate user adoption. The system can also run on Oracle Database 11g R2. According to Sage, the X3 software can support several thousand concurrent users, process several hundred thousand transactions per hour, and synchronize data across customers&#039; sites.<\/p> <p>Sage focused heavily on improving the customer experience in this release. Among the enhancements is new, multi-language Sage VisualProcesses software, which provides templates so that users can create their own customized interfaces. Users also can link to external applications and the web to access information and create financial and other reports quickly.<\/p> <p>Another innovation scheduled to be available in a point release in the second half of 2010 is Sage Enterprise Webtop, developed in partnership with Netvibes. The tool will enable companies to build web applications that monitor their products and reputations in the outside world. Netvibes&#039; partnership with Sage serves to tie that information to &quot;the inside world&quot; of the enterprise, according to Netvibes CEO Freddy Mini. <\/p> <p>The latest version of X3 maintains the product&#039;s core modules for finance, sales, CRM, purchasing, inventory, and manufacturing. Manufacturing-centered capabilities include parts-list management, work scheduling management, MRP functions, quality assurance, and capacity planning, among other capabilities.<\/p> <p>In redesigning the product, the company recognized that ERP products already do a good job of automating processes, said Emmanuel Obadia, senior vice president, Sage ERP X3, at today&#039;s press conference. However, a more &quot;user-centric ERP&quot; offering was needed to &quot;re-engage&quot; the younger managers coming up the ranks. I usually see a few webinars every month but I particularly liked this one. The presenter-Jason Askelson, Director of Professional Services-did a very good job at showing the highlights of the new release, providing a comparison between the previous version and the new one, giving an overview of the mobile version, and of how to ensure a successful upgrade and/or migration.<\/p> <p><strong>Highlights of Version 7.5.2<\/strong><\/p> <p>Here are some of the options available in the new version:<br/> &bull; unicode support for fields (multiple languages can be used in the same screen)<br/> &bull; availability of updated <a href=\"http://support.saleslogix.com/\">technical documentation<\/a> for the product<br/> &bull; enhanced e-mail attachment handling<br/> &bull; new Web client features for activities, calendaring, sales orders, and sales  libraries<span id=\"more-702\"><\/span><\/p> <p>People attending the webinar were able to see screen shots of some of the new features and even preview a short demo.<\/p> <p><strong>Old Functionality vs. New Functionality<\/strong><\/p> <p>I was surprised that the previous version of SalesLogix did not have options that could be considered as basic functionality in most customer relationship management (CRM) systems. Here are a few examples:<br/> - In the activity reminders screen, you can use the snooze functionality on one, multiple, or all reminders in one shot. In the previous version, you had to select a single record at a time or all, but not multiple.<br/> -  You can drill down to an activity from both the grid and the detail section. This wasn&#039;t available in the previous version.<\/p> <p>SalesLogix is using honesty as a sales strategy, which-in my opinion-is better than trying to hide problems and only showing the strengths of the new version.<\/p> <p><strong>Sage SalesLogix Mobile v5.6<\/strong><\/p> <p>The new version of Sage SalesLogix for mobile cannot be used on the iPhone, but brings improved calendar integration, support for high-resolution devices, and SData support (data can be retrieved without being stored locally, option for read-only access, etc.).<\/p> <p><strong>What to Expect During an Upgrade or Migration from LAN to Web<\/strong><\/p> <p>The new version&#039;s enhancements were created to encourage customers to try the Web version. Marshall said if the respondents knew the answer to this, they were deemed to be &quot;more financially literate.&quot; <\/p><p>&quot;Seventy-eight per cent of Canadian small business owners are more financially literate,&quot; Marshall said. &quot;Twenty-two per cent said they didn&#039;t know what their most important cost was that is needed to get the business under control.&quot; <\/p><p>Another key finding when it comes to what type of compliance small businesses are the most concerned about, 38 per cent of small businesses stated that income taxes are a concern for them, with 16 per cent of them citing sales taxes, followed by record keeping, at 13 per cent. <\/p><p>Sixteen per cent of survey respondents who represented a one-person small business, said retail sales taxes were a concern for them, compared with only nine per cent of small businesses of six or more employees. <\/p><p>&quot;Small businesses that have six or more employees are more likely to have a full-time book keeper or accountant and they&#039;re less likely to worry than a one-person small business,&quot; Marshall said. &quot;If you&#039;re self-employed, this is a bigger concern. These findings show there are differences in the types of concerns based on the employee size.&quot;<\/p> <span class=\"text\"><p>Hugo Croft-Levesque, senior manager of product management at Sage, said with the upcoming harmonized value-added sales tax (HST) taking effect on July 1, 2010 in Ontario and British Columbia, all small businesses in these provinces will be affected.<\/p><\/span><br/> <p>Sutherland said Sage&#039;s Simply Accounting software suite is designed to help keep customers compliant with the upcoming regulations. <\/p><p>&quot;A lot of small businesses don&#039;t understand things like what the biggest cost for them in their business is and that&#039;s critical to understanding and running a business,&quot; Sutherland said. &quot;It takes a bit more training and understanding to see where the business is trending and customers should be evaluating their reports on a weekly or monthly basis so it&#039;s a routine.&quot; <\/p><p>Marshall said customers who fail to include any tax changes into their financial plans for the coming year are subject to missing out on opportunities to minimize their tax bills, compared to customers who are determined to be more financially literate. <\/p><p>Sutherland said Sage partners can leverage customers who may not be as financially literate as some of the others by providing them with tools such as accounting software, which helps automate certain processes. <\/p><p>In addition to helping to raise awareness and helping customers become more financially literate, Sutherland will be travelling across Canada beginning Jan. 16, 2010 on a nine-city listening tour to hear form book keepers, accountants and end-users on what their business needs and feedback are. <\/p><p>&quot;A key theme for us this year is around the customer experience and being customer-connected,&quot; After all, the companies themselves have survived the worst of their growth pains. The accounting requirements, while slightly more demanding, are well-defined and easily within the range of the systems available on the market.<\/p><p>Yet, in the past two years, this category of software has shown remarkable evolution. This is due to three factors:<\/p><p>&#042; The rise of cloud computing. As on-demand computing has arisen in the age of broadband, an increasing number of companies have emerged to offer accounting systems that can provide lower total cost of ownership, lower installation and set-up costs, more modern and robust user interfaces, and more advanced features. Leading the pack in this regard are two companies, NetSuite and Intacct.<\/p><div><p>&#042; Increased competition. Sage now offers a bevy of mid-range accounting solutions, from Peachtree Quantum to Sage Accpac. So does Microsoft, which in its Dynamics family features at least four offerings of its own. QuickBooks is gaining strength and moving up into the enterprise, and there are at least half a dozen other programs that have firmly entrenched user bases and strong features.<\/p><p>&#042; New features. As happened with both tax prep software and payroll software, features that used to be extra-cost add-ons are being incorporated into the main body of the core accounting systems, beefing up those programs and putting software companies toe to toe in the development cycle. It is not a coincidence that most of the packages we review are now in Version 11.0.<\/p> <p>Eventually, this will mean some level of consolidation, as companies move to the cloud, merge or otherwise move down the product life-cycle curve. For this year, however, this class of software remains robust and interesting.
