And being around for over 20 years counts for something.  Actually being around for that long counts for a lot, because over that amount of time millions have people have built up very important contact databases they depend on every day to cultivate relationships with customers and prospects.<\/p> <p>Having its roots in a time when nobody outside of defense and academia knew what the Internet was, it&#039;s no surprise that it&#039;s an installed application. But if you&#039;re a solo salesperson ACT! has everything you need to track activities, manage opportunities and keep up with customer information.  And if you&#039;re an Outlook user as well there&#039;s good integration between the two apps.   Sage kept adding functionality with new versions of the software, but it had a stale look and feel to it compared to some of the SaaS offerings that have taken over the market.  But that has changed with the latest version of the software - ACT! 2010.<\/p> <p>The first thing you notice about ACT! 2010 is that it has a much fresher look to its user interface.  It also is much easier to navigate than previous editions.   You can now even view social network profiles from sites like LinkedIn, Facebook, Plaxo and others right from within a contact record.  This is done through an internal web browser, not a deep integration that some of the other services have.  But at least you can view the information along with other contact data you have.<\/p> <p>While the new interface and ability to view social profiles from within the app are definite pluses, the biggest addition to me is the new email marketing capabilities.  Through a partnership with email service provider <a href=\"http://swiftpage.com/\">Swiftpage<\/a>, Sage has created a cloud-based e-mail marketing service with templates for designing e-mail, surveys and web forms for gathering feedback.  This service also enables ACT! 2010 user to use drip marketing controls for automating campaigns with multiple e-mails, and provides a marketing results tab for identifying qualified prospects based on open and click-through metrics.<\/p> <p>This is a significant development, and should serve as a major catalyst for those ACT! users who&#039;ve sat out a few upgrade cycles to jump on board.  ACT! E-marketing will make it easier for users to stay connected to their contacts, and to easily create new ways to generate leads.  Capturing new leads is good, but being able to score leads and run them through an automated nurturing process based on those scores can lead to new business that otherwise would have been ignored.<\/p> <p>Another game changing development that directly impacted the development of the E-marketing service is the ACT! community.  This is one of the more active communities I&#039;ve seen in the industry - from both the users and from Sage employees.  And from the interaction between Sage and its users (as well as interaction between community members themselves) the need for integrating email marketing into the application became very apparent.  Sage&#039;s responding to the needs of the ACT! community bodes well for the customers, and for Sage.<\/p> <p>Sage still needs to figure a SaaS strategy for ACT!, and while there are 3<sup>rd<\/sup> party tools for using ACT! on mobile devices, it&#039;s time for Sage itself to provide an affordable, easy to use mobile solution to their large customer base.  They&#039;ve also got to do a better job of integrating social profiles into the application.  But give them credit, they&#039;ve made some big strides over the past year.  And they are showing a great deal of interest in what their users are saying.  This should help them hold on to those who&#039;ve invested so much time building up their ACT! databases. Our companies have been running Peachtree for as long as I remember, so we&#039;ve always been fans. I am not at liberty to give details, but I will say this: I was under the misconception that the corporate culture of Peachtree was a bit stuffy. After all, the companies themselves have survived the worst of their growth pains. The accounting requirements, while slightly more demanding, are well-defined and easily within the range of the systems available on the market.<\/p><p>Yet, in the past two years, this category of software has shown remarkable evolution. This is due to three factors:<\/p><p>&#042; The rise of cloud computing. As on-demand computing has arisen in the age of broadband, an increasing number of companies have emerged to offer accounting systems that can provide lower total cost of ownership, lower installation and set-up costs, more modern and robust user interfaces, and more advanced features. Leading the pack in this regard are two companies, NetSuite and Intacct.<\/p><div><p>&#042; Increased competition. Sage now offers a bevy of mid-range accounting solutions, from Peachtree Quantum to Sage Accpac. So does Microsoft, which in its Dynamics family features at least four offerings of its own. QuickBooks is gaining strength and moving up into the enterprise, and there are at least half a dozen other programs that have firmly entrenched user bases and strong features.<\/p><p>&#042; New features. As happened with both tax prep software and payroll software, features that used to be extra-cost add-ons are being incorporated into the main body of the core accounting systems, beefing up those programs and putting software companies toe to toe in the development cycle. It is not a coincidence that most of the packages we review are now in Version 11.0.<\/p> <p>Eventually, this will mean some level of consolidation, as companies move to the cloud, merge or otherwise move down the product life-cycle curve. For this year, however, this class of software remains robust and interesting. For many, they are a seasonal necessity with built-in obsolescence. They&#039;re also a pain in the ass to install in frozen or rocky soil.<\/p> <p>For serial inventor Arra David, the product category was ripe for a makeover.<\/p> <p>He invented the <a href=\"http://www.rebounddrivewaymarker.com/\" target=\"_blank\">Rebound<\/a>, a driveway marker equipped with an eight-inch spike and a stainless steel spring at the base. The Rebound, which drew its inspiration from slalom ski markers, bends but doesn&#039;t break. And it can pierce tundra-like soil. The product, released this fall, sells for &#036;5.49 apiece in the United States, about &#036;1 more than a standard marker.<\/p> <p>&quot;The price point is right,&quot; says David, &quot;and it solves the two biggest problems with conventional driveway markers&quot; - the difficulty of installing them after a freeze or snowfall and their fragility. Winters are rough on driveway markers, which experience a mortality rate of up to 50 percent.<\/p> <p>&quot;People who buy these,&quot; says David, &quot;are typically replacing ones they lost last year.&quot;<\/p> <p>The Rebound&#039;s utility and simplicity make it among one of our best innovations for 2009 in our <strong>low-cost/high value<\/strong> category. At the outset of this year, we identified promising areas for innovation despite the wheezing economy. The categories included <strong>toys and games<\/strong>, <strong>baby boomer goods<\/strong>, <strong>green products<\/strong>, <strong>pet products<\/strong> and <strong>consumer electronics<\/strong>. Our best-of-breed list in this issue focuses on products from independent inventors.<\/p> <p>We said back in January, &quot;The key will be to give people what they want - to create products that align with consumer demand.&quot;<\/p> <p>The Rebound nails it.<\/p> <p>Yet the Rebound offers more than just a useful product at a reasonable price. David and his business partner, Mike Collins, have created a &quot;micro-business,&quot; a lean and mean single-product company around the Rebound.<\/p> <p>The New Hampshire company of the same name has gone from ideation to product commercialization to - and this is the important part - <em>profitability<\/em> within nine months. Their business model, based on razor-thin overhead, lightning speed to market, and input from a paid online community, makes it worthy of a <a href=\"http://www.hbs.edu/\" target=\"_blank\">Harvard Business School <\/a>case study.<\/p> <p>Collins is the CEO of <a href=\"http://www.bigideagroup.net/\" target=\"_blank\">Big Idea Group<\/a>, an online product-development firm. Rebound&#039;s first-year profitability miracle is due in large part to the informed feedback Collins and David got from scores of Big Idea Group community members. Rebound, in fact, owes its origins to a crowd.<\/p> <h3><strong>Guided by the Crowd <\/strong><\/h3> <p>Late last year Collins conducted a survey for an infomercial company. It was interested in generating product ideas to solve problems related to residential driveways or garages. Big Idea Group queried its Web audience for, well, big ideas.<\/p> <p>More than several respondents mentioned the need for better driveway markers. The problem that feeble driveway markers posed resonated with Collins, a Yankee and veteran of snow. The infomercial client, however, wasn&#039;t interested.<\/p> <p>Undeterred, Collins returned to his online community and asked them to &quot;solve the driveway problem.&quot;<\/p> <p>Arra David, a mechanical engineer who designs high-end gift products for a living, presented his product called the Willow, a &quot;beautiful stainless steel marker with hanging d&eacute;cor.&quot;<\/p> <p>Collins and David had worked on marketing a backlit paper cutter, which was a finalist in a past <a href=\"http://www.staples.com/\" target=\"_blank\">Staples Invention Quest<\/a>. Although Staples awarded the grand prize to inventor Todd Basche for the popular <a href=\"http://www.wordlock.com/\" target=\"_blank\">Wordlock <\/a>padlock, Collins remained smitten with David&#039;s Craft-Lite Cutter. Big Idea Group eventually licensed the product to Merchant Media, who successfully marketed it via print, internet, TV and stores.<\/p> <p>When it came to the driveway marker, the two agreed to poll the Big Idea Group&#039;s online community for feedback on the Willow. The verdict: It was &quot;too different,&quot; says Collins.<\/p> <p>Collins paid respondents &#036;25 for 15 minutes of their time and further feedback.<\/p> <p>&quot;We used the (online) panel to refine it,&quot; says Collins. &quot;It&#039;s been really kind of this interactive thing.&quot;<\/p> <p>Based on the responses, David returned to the drawing board, created a stripped-down version of the Willow and the Rebound was born.<\/p> <p>While David is skeptical of focus groups, he represents a breed of inventor who welcomes informed criticism.<\/p> <p>&quot;I think focus groups have two big disadvantages,&quot; David says. &quot;It&#039;s hard to get people with relevant opinions and you tend to get this group-think effect. The first person to speak, whether they are charismatic or unlikeable, can really influence the outcome. You don&#039;t get terribly valuable feedback.<\/p> <p>&quot;To some extent, an online community also is an artificial setting,&quot; he adds, &quot;but when you poll 300 who aren&#039;t connected, it&#039;s a wonderful resource.&quot;<\/p> <p>David and Collins enjoy a good working chemistry. David is adept at engineering and prototyping; Collins possesses administrative and business acumen. Rather than seek a traditional licensing deal, the two decided to forge a company around the Rebound.<\/p> <p>They have an equal equity stake in Rebound and split all costs 50-50. And those costs are kept to a rock-bottom minimum through deft use of readily available technology.<\/p> <p>&quot;We talked about how we&#039;d love to have no overhead,&quot; says Collins, &quot;and use subcontractors for everything. Basically, we said, &#039;How can we create this as virtually as possible?&#039;&quot;<\/p> <p>The nascent business used <a href=\"http://www.mfg.com\" target=\"_blank\">MFG.com<\/a> to find an overseas manufacturer. They used commission-only sales people. They filed their own legal and business documents. And they used an hourly, part-time bookkeeper and Peachtree Accounting Software.<\/p> <p>The company has no physical office space. Most communication is done via cell phones or Skype.<\/p> <p>Some of their biggest costs involved attending tradeshows. That investment has paid off. He and David already are working on an expanded line of more ornate driveway markers for next season - ones with Santas and other seasonal icons.<\/p> <p>The effort has been so successful, Collins&#039; Big Idea Group launched a contest to create more companies around new products. A panel of three judges will review submissions and select the products they believe are most likely to succeed. The winner or winners - Collins said he won&#039;t limit the contest to finding just one good idea - will get help from Big Idea Group.
