These basics of financial reporting \n  have been around for what seems like forever, so why change your tool for producing \n  these now? That&#039;s an easy question to answer, actually - new demands \n  by business for better information and advances in technology make change possible.<\/p> <p> Consider the case of FRx, a real favorite for financial reporting due to its \n  flexibility, ease of use and the great variety of reports it can generate. FRx \n  introduced the concepts of rows, columns and trees that could be mixed and matched \n  to provide a wide variety of ways to slice and dice financial data. It also \n  had some Excel-like features so the commands were familiar. Like many great \n  software tools, FRx broke new ground and went through multiple owners, from \n  its start in 1984 as one of the products offered by Platinum Software (now known \n  as Epicor) to it&#039;s acquisition by Great Plains Software in 2000 to its \n  current owner, that goliath called Microsoft.<\/p> <p> To be fair, there were some limitations with FRx, and for Microsoft, some \n  unwanted side effects since acquiring it committed them to selling and supporting \n  FRx for their major ERP competitors. So as the company updated and revised its \n  ERP offerings, Microsoft made it known that it was also setting it sights on \n  developing a replacement for FRx. They were one of a number of publishers signaling \n  to the industry that status quo was no longer an option. Creative minds and \n  programmers went to work, and as a result we start the next decade with more \n  choices for financial reporting and a noticeable shift to incorporate broader \n  application/module reporting using the same tools used for financial reports. \n  The good news for accountants, who would rather give up coffee than be told \n  they can no longer use Excel, is that most of the new offerings actually wrap \n  themselves around Excel. So now I probably have your attention.<br/> <br/> <strong>THIS NEW GENERATION OF TOOLS HAS SEVERAL COMMON ELEMENTS:<\/strong><br/> The use of Microsoft Excel or an Excel-like interface for ease of adoption. \n  Rather than try to rewrite the already feature-rich spreadsheet program, developers \n  are using Excel for reporting, knowing that the product already enjoys the loyalty \n  of most all accountants.<\/p> <p> Data sources have been expanded. For a long time, financial reporting tools \n  were narrowly focused on the GL module and the information stored there. Many \n  of the new generation of products look beyond GL, broadening their net to allow \n  the creation of reports and analysis of data from subsidiary modules. As a result, \n  customer and vendor information, as well as inventory and payroll information \n  (and more), can be included in the analysis reports from these tools.<\/p> <p> Easier learning curve. It just makes sense that if the tool you are using \n  for financial statements can also report from other modules, adoption will be \n  quicker by you and your team.<\/p> <p> The tools are much more user friendly, designed to be utilized by a broad \n  base of users. You don&#039;t need to hire a programmer to start creating reports, \n  just invest in good training, and you&#039;ll learn how to take advantage of \n  the powerful features included in their tools. You could do it yourself, but \n  you&#039;ll undoubtedly miss some of the coolest of features. So invest in \n  learning &quot;how&quot; to do it, and save the do-it-yourself for honing \n  the skills on what you have learned.<\/p> <p> Graphs and charts, oh my. Sure, accountants are happy reading reports full \n  of numbers, but not everyone can make critical business decisions basely solely \n  on a number. Many of the reporting tools empower you to also present information \n  graphically, which helps to make it meaningful for the non-accounting users, \n  like the boss or the folks in marketing.<\/p><\/div><\/span><\/div><table id='zwNextPrev' width='100%'><tr><td style='text-align: left;' align='left'>&lt;&lt; According to the report, leading companies are employing electronic payments and process automation to streamline and accelerate finance processes, reduce operating costs, and improve visibility, control, and efficiency to provide a foundation for increased profits.<\/p> <p>&quot;Despite the reign of the paper check and manual-based processes in business-to-business transactions in the U.S. and many parts of the world, economic and efficiency gains from automating the financial supply chain-from invoicing through payment settlement-are key motivators for demand and supply to align,&quot; said Nasreen Quibria, senior analyst at Aberdeen and author of the report. &quot;While the adoption of electronic payment vehicles requires businesses to alter their payment behavior and restructure their financial processes, companies that can make the shift will gain competitive advantage.&quot;<\/p> <p>Reflecting the unpredictable economic conditions of the past year, Aberdeen found that companies are focused on maximizing cash flow and taking a holistic approach to transactions-examining the flow of funds into Accounts Receivable (AR), and outflow of funds from Accounts Payable (AP).<\/p> <p>In its survey of more than 160 companies worldwide, Aberdeen found that businesses adopting electronic channels have been able to achieve a 16&#037; decrease in accounts receivable (AR) processing cost, and a 14&#037; decrease in accounts payable (AP) costs year over year.<\/p> <p>&quot;Aberdeen&#039;s report shows the value that systems interoperability with electronic payment networks has for both buyers and suppliers,&quot; said Greg Hammermaster, president of Sage Payment Solutions, the payments division for Sage North America. &quot;We believe this interoperability is critical toward achieving three major payments objectives for every business: improving cash flow, reducing costs, and maximizing the utility of their ERP environment.&quot;<\/p> <p>The Aberdeen survey identified two main pressures creating the need for improved payments processing:<\/p> <ul> <li>Corporate mandate to reduce overall payment transaction costs, such as staff and processing (65&#037;); and<\/li> <li>Stakeholder demand for improved operational efficiency, such as reduced reliance on paper documents (47&#037;).<\/li> <\/ul> <p>Also, according to Aberdeen, 50&#037; of best-in-class companies integrate their electronic payment solutions with their accounting, enterprise resource planning (ERP), or other financial systems. At the same time, 39&#037; of best-in-class companies identify a lack of integration between electronic payments and accounting systems as a barrier to increased electronic payments.<\/p> <p>Last month, Sage introduced Sage Exchange, a new secure, Payment Application Data Security Standard (PA-DSS) certified payment platform that will allow businesses and organizations to accept all forms and methods of payment, with seamless data integration to a wide range of Sage business management software products and third-party business solutions. Seamless integration between payment applications and back-office software can improve an organization&#039;s cash flow and forecasting, while eliminating manual data entry and the risk of errors.<\/p> <p>&quot;Integrating electronic payment networks with back office ERP systems is a challenge faced by all businesses,&quot; added Hammermaster. &quot;Sage Exchange overcomes this challenge by tightly integrating Sage&#039;s accounting and ERP solutions, on both the AR and AP sides, with the most widely used electronic payment networks, including credit and debit cards, electronic check, ACH, and even private label networks. While electronic payments data integration is the foundation, exponential value will be gained through a suite of connected services focused on streamlining the financial supply chain. Prior to Sage, Miller worked at Microsoft for eight years. Reflecting back over year one, Miller said he&#039;s &quot;pleased&quot; with the progress the company&#039;s made with its channel thus far. <\/p><p>&quot;I&#039;m pleased with the progress we&#039;ve made but I think we still have a lot of work to do.&quot; Miller said. &quot;We need to make sure we have the right sets of programs for our partners and help them find new customers and opportunities. We also have to get communications out to our partners and provide training so we&#039;re all partner-ready. I&#039;m confident that we can get there, but it&#039;s an evolving work in progress.&quot; <\/p><p>Among some of the new partner offerings are four workshops around sales, consulting, customer experience and business strategy. <\/p><p>Miller said when he joined Sage last summer and had a look at the existing programs, one of the improvements he wanted to make was increasing the number of partners participating in them. <\/p><p>&quot;We found that some of these programs were too expensive from a time and out-of-pocket standpoint,&quot; Miller explained. &quot;Partners also wanted a more condensed version that was offered closer to home.&quot; <\/p><p>To give partners more of what they wanted, Miller said Sage introduced its sales, consulting and customer experience workshops. The sales workshop is a free, one-day intensive selling workshop to help partners improve on their sales performance. The consulting workshop, which is also free, is designed to help partners further develop their business and consulting skills.
