The paper covered all of the ideas you'd expect including lowering costs and improving access to on-demand applications. But there was another part of the paper that speculated that if technology was that easy to come by then the next thing to look for was enhanced service based on the technology.

In other words, technology access would cease being a gating factor in executing business processes. Replacing technology as a gating factor would be having the smarts to use it optimally. I envisioned that service companies that had operated more or less locally would, or at least could, become national or global by selling their expertise based on the on-demand technology. The computer and telephone enabled public relations firms to become national in scope, but a bit more is required for a marketing services company or a design company for example.

It has taken a long time and it seems what happened first and what I had not fully foreseen was the globalization of applications based on platform technologies. Right now, Salesforce appears to be the most successful practitioner of that art. But now we appear to be at the beginning of an era when business services will become global or at least national based on the consolidated expertise of some organizations.

Judging by some of Sage Software's recent actions, that globalization might be taking off at the SMB end of the spectrum. Recently, Sage announced new marketing services for its ACT! customers. The first service will be email marketing available on-demand. Now this may not seem to be a very big move since there are many independent email marketing providers already on the market like Constant Contact, ExactTarget, VerticalResponse and many others (you get 36 million hits on Google).

But don't lose sight of the bigger picture. With a three million user installed base in North America that has many marketing needs beyond email, Sage is poised to build a services engine that could eventually rival its software business. This would be a very smart end run around the company's own business model limitations. To be precise, Sage sells its products exclusively through a reseller channel. The resellers deliver product, customization and advice leaving slim pickings for Sage beyond the license revenue.

The primary way Sage grows in this model is through product sales and by recruiting new partners. But no market is infinite and the market of resellers is relatively small compared to the market of end users. You see where I am going. There is nothing prohibiting Sage from offering services based on the products it makes and the installations that its partners effect. As a matter of fact, offering this kind of service, which only makes the end customer more productive, should drive demand for the products themselves. Looks like a smart and virtuous circle to me as well as a new kind of on-demand service.

I believe the era we are entering will be constraining for many companies in several ways, not the least of which is transportation. As fuel prices resume their rise with the recovery, companies will need to find ways to take travel costs out of their value propositions. That should mean a need to enhanced marketing as in, how can we use marketing rather than face time to close more deals?

The answer to that question goes beyond email marketing and probably beyond the meager efforts that so many SMB companies now use to sell their products. Centralizing key services that can be delivered at scale via the Internet will enable SMB's to continue to compete in select markets against larger competitors. It is also a growth market and who doesn't like that?

<< Previous Article | Next Article >>

Return to List

"},"v8a7c9fef2693aa1e0126d3b659a5312b":

<< Previous Article | Next Article >>

Return to List

Sage SalesLogix v7.5.2: An Overview

TEC BlogJanuary 15, 2010

A couple of weeks ago, I viewed a webinar about Sage SalesLogix v7.5.2. I usually see a few webinars every month but I particularly liked this one. The presenter-Jason Askelson, Director of Professional Services-did a very good job at showing the highlights of the new release, providing a comparison between the previous version and the new one, giving an overview of the mobile version, and of how to ensure a successful upgrade and/or migration.

Highlights of Version 7.5.2

Here are some of the options available in the new version:
• unicode support for fields (multiple languages can be used in the same screen)
• availability of updated technical documentation for the product
• enhanced e-mail attachment handling
• new Web client features for activities, calendaring, sales orders, and sales libraries

People attending the webinar were able to see screen shots of some of the new features and even preview a short demo.

Old Functionality vs. New Functionality

I was surprised that the previous version of SalesLogix did not have options that could be considered as basic functionality in most customer relationship management (CRM) systems. Here are a few examples:
- In the activity reminders screen, you can use the snooze functionality on one, multiple, or all reminders in one shot. In the previous version, you had to select a single record at a time or all, but not multiple.
- You can drill down to an activity from both the grid and the detail section. This wasn't available in the previous version.

SalesLogix is using honesty as a sales strategy, which-in my opinion-is better than trying to hide problems and only showing the strengths of the new version.

Sage SalesLogix Mobile v5.6

The new version of Sage SalesLogix for mobile cannot be used on the iPhone, but brings improved calendar integration, support for high-resolution devices, and SData support (data can be retrieved without being stored locally, option for read-only access, etc.).

What to Expect During an Upgrade or Migration from LAN to Web

The new version's enhancements were created to encourage customers to try the Web version. This is on top of utilizing that simplified architecture (think HTTP) that is so smart when it comes to the Sage target market - small and the lower end of mid-sized businesses.

What makes Sage a great story and something that I expect to see develop further in 2010 is that this is a company that was behind the eight-ball for years - always a generation and a half back when it came to how they "architected" their CRM applications. Plus their partner channel would compete with itself. I actually saw a Sage partner (twice happened - two separate partners) decide to have SageCRM compete with SalesLogix CRM in a meeting with potential buyers. I mean think about this. Twice.

But they've done wonders with both their CRM products and their partner channels - not only adjusting to the contemporary customer trends and demands but also giving the partners a forum to interact with them.

They've even done something that I never expected. They made ACT! 2010 Premium a "nearly SFA" product - it still lacks business rules/workflows and strong pipeline management. (I remember someone calling pipeline in a comedy routine a "pippa-leany." Anyone remember who did that? Saw it probably 40 years ago. Might have been Chico Marx. Sigh.). They also, using Lithium, created an ACT! community that had 8.9 million page views in its first 12 months. They've made what was a stodgy product into an exceptional one. As they have done to a lesser extent with SalesLogix and SageCRM.

But they haven't stopped there. They have developed solid mobile products for their CRM offerings, they are moving SalesLogix into the cloud, though that isn't a final project yet. They have folks like Ryan Zuk who knows how to stay in touch with and retain the good will of analysts and journalists - which as ridiculous as it sounds - is something that IT companies have to do to remain visible and competitive.

So we have a company that is necessarily contemporary with technical and functional trends, on target with their target market - and not getting greedy, doing what they have to do when it comes to visibility - all in all solid as a rock.

Which is where any nagging doubts remain. Rocks are solid which means they don't flow - and resting on laurels is something that Sage/Best Software/SalesLogix (past ownerships) has had a tendency to do in the past. There are some things they need to do and improvements they need to make. Among them:

Keep innovating even though they are now on target. I don't know what that means for them. Could be more in the mobile realm; could be the incorporation of more SMB useful social features

Keep eyes on the prize - don't get greedy as so many other companies have and trick yourself into believing that you have a different target market.

Do a bit better - not a lot but a bit - when it comes to thought leadership for the SMB CRM market.

If Sage does these things their ascent will continue. If they don't, they might prove me wrong in 2010. That would not be good.

<< Previous Article | Next Article >>

Return to List

"},"v8a7c9fef259c7ffe01260e7b86801b93":

<< Previous Article | Next Article >>

Return to List

Okay Here Goes - CRM Forecast 2010 - Part I

zdnetDecember 21, 2009

Just so you know, this year, I'll do even better than last year (notice by adding the word "even' it makes it seem like I did really well last year but will improve over that sterling performance. Looking Back at CRM 2009 Forecast and decide whether "even' is justified or just a psychological ploy). One of the reasons for that is because of refinements to my incredibly good algorithm that drove my forecast last year. The old version was:

eu + gw (l*bl)/i = fw, where eu = eye use; gw = guesswork; l=luck; bl=blind luck; i=intuition and fw = forecast wisdom.

But I've been working diligently on the algorithm - you can never be too right now can you? - and I've come up with some real improvements that I think can decrease the inefficiency of the forecast by at least 20X what it is today. That would be this:

(eu*cl) + gw(l*bl)*ts/20 = fw where eu = eye use; cl = contact lenses; gw = guesswork; l = luck; bl = blind luck; ts = total speculation; and 20 of course equals the amount to decrease the inefficiency by.

Of course, this is a HUGE breakthrough in analyst forecasting that I don't think can be underestimated. Its so big that I'm giving this formula to the world so that you can predict almost anything you want by plugging the specifics into these parameters. For example, I found that the Mayan calendar is actually off and the world will end in January 2013, not December 2012 as previously thought.

Okay, now on to the forecast. Like last year there are things to note, three to be exact:

The number in parentheses ahead of the forecast is the likelihood of the event happening reflected in 1 - 10 in which 1 is not real likely - in fact as likely as Tiger Woods….no I won't go there.

Once again, I have the right to invoke the Pundit Immunity Clause (PIC) which has undergone significant revision with the November meeting of the Pundit Standards Committee made up of a bunch of people who think they know everything. It now reads:
"In the event of an incorrect forecast, or a specious speculation, as a pundit, I invoke my right to not be criticized or maligned or physically, mentally, emotionally or spiritually assaulted - or just have my butt handed to me.'

Because of the ungodly size of this post, I'm going to do the splitscreen thing again. The first half of this post (with the LATAM forecast from Jesus Hoyos and the first 5 "predictions') will be on ZDNet (here in other words). The second half (starting with #6) will (simultaneously) be published on PGreenblog. Both of these will magically appear on the sites at 7:00am ET on Monday morning, December 21 so if you're reading this, happy week and more especially, Happy Holidays to one and all.

Okay, so watch for my invocation of the PIC throughout the year and let's get ready to rumble (or possibly, bumble)

First, before I begin, I want to give you a holiday gift. Let's give a big rousing and warm welcome to Latin American CRM thought leader, Jesus Hoyos, who I've invited to give you his perspective and forecast for Latin America in 2010. This latest edition retains all its amazing powers to organize, link, and display data on contacts and companies, together with its tight integration with Microsoft Outlook, while, for the first time, it adds the ability to link to social networking sites like Facebook or LinkedIn and online services like Google Maps. I'm more impressed than ever by ACT!'s ability to combine in a single interface desktop-centric data like the Outlook address book and Calendar with the online information that I increasingly rely on.

<a style="text-decoration: none; width: 74px; display: block; text-align: right;" title="Vote for your favorite stories on Yahoo! Each user can fine-tune the information that other users can view. (A Premium version extends sharing features to larger businesses.) After a wizard-based installation that creates an empty database, I imported contacts and calendar data from Outlook, a task that took about twenty minutes to import 2200 names. When opening a contract entry, ACT! displays traditional address-book fields in the top half of the window, together with fields listing my most recent activities relating to that contact. A tabbed interface in the bottom half of the window has twelve tabs each leading to more detailed information than can fit in the top half.

View Slideshow See all (13) slides

More

An "activities" tab shows a tabular color-coded list of calls, meetings, e-mails, and other connections I've made with a contact. An "opportunities" tab lists tasks I've set up so that I can follow through on a sales pitch or negotiation. Other tabs lead to notes, documents, and various categories that the contact belongs to, social networking and other web pages, and much more. There's a more information available with only a few clicks than in any standard PIM, but the layout is clear enough to keep it from being overwhelming.

As in previous versions, when you click a button to write a letter to a contact, ACT! opens Microsoft Word (or ACT!'s built-in word processor) and inserts your contact's address at the top and your signature at the bottom of the document. Or you can choose a document template and start with boilerplate text already in your letter. When you exchange e-mails with contacts, ACT! automatically keeps a record of it. When you click on an e-mail address anywhere in ACT!, Outlook (or any other standard mail client that you prefer) creates a blank message. ACT! keeps its own full-featured calendar, which it can synchronize with Outlook's calendar at user-specified intervals. Unfortunately, ACT!'s web-based features don't extend to direct integration with online calendars like Google Calendar, but you can get around this limitation by sharing your Outlook calendar with both Google and ACT!

The Web page integration works by searching for your contact's name in LinkedIn, Facebook, or other sites in an embedded browser window. You may need to make a click or two on the resulting social network page to find your contact's actual personal page. There seems to be no way to store that URL with the contact's information so that you won't have to search again next time, but it's better than nothing. (Warning: don't click on the Edit Fields button on the Web Info page and put your contact's URL in the LinkedIn or Facebook field, because that will make this contact's page appear in the Web Info page for all your other contacts.)

Overall, ACT!'s revamped interface looks and acts a lot like Outlook. The old tiny-icon toolbar is replaced by a new toolbar with large buttons. The sidebar at the left of the main window, formerly a simple stack of icons, now adds a search field at the top that saved me dozens of trips to the Lookup button when I wanted to find data.

After installing ACT!, Outlook gets a new toolbar that lets you click a button and create a new ACT! contact from the sender of a message, or link the message to a contact in ACT!'s address book. Frustratingly, the link-message feature brings up a dialog box that only lets you search for an ACT! contact by last name. If you remember only the first name, you'll have to switch to ACT! and use its search feature to find the contact's last name, then switch back to Outlook to link the message.

Similar interface glitches get in the way in many of ACT!'s dialogs. For example, when you open the Add/Remove dialog that lets you select a group or company name to which you want to attach a contact, you won't find a button that lets you create a new group or company name. Instead you have to close the dialog, click on the New button in the top toolbar, create the new group or company name, and then go back to the Add/Remove dialog. This is a surprising annoyance in an otherwise sleekly-designed interface, but such minor glitches don't seriously detract from ACT!'s smooth-running power and the intricate but clear integration of its features.

Bottom Line
This new version, with its sleeker interface and new web features, is probably a must-have upgrade for existing users, and is sure to attract new users who were discouraged by the steep learning curve of earlier versions. There's nothing else as effective as ACT! for keeping track of business contacts and activities, and the program finally has the interface it deserves.

<< Previous Article | Next Article >>

Return to List

"}};
